Arsenal star told he should beat Declan Rice and Phil Foden to Player of the Season award
Arsenal have two players in contention for the Premier League Player of the Season award, but one star ought to feel aggrieved to have not been nominated.
Arsenal midfield duo Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard has both been nominated for the official Premier League Player of the Season award.
Manchester City’s Phil Foden and Erling Haaland are also in contention, whilst Ollie Watkins of Aston Villa, Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak, Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk, and Cole Palmer of Chelsea round out the nominees.
Foden is likely the favourite to bag the individual honour, having recently been named the FWA Player of the Year. However, former Newcastle boss Alan Pardew has now revealed that he would back Rice for the prize.
Rice and Odegaard have both been sensational this season. Gary Neville recently named Odegaard as his personal pick for player of the season.
However, William Saliba may feel hard done by not to have found himself amongst the official nominees himself.
Arsenal star William Saliba deserves same honour as Phil Foden and Declan Rice
The French centre-back has played every single minute of Premier League football for Arsenal this season, and has scarcely put a toe wrong in all that game time. The Gunners’ title challenge has been built on a bedrock of defensive solidity, and the 23-year-old has been at the heart of that.
The centre-back was once again imperious against Manchester United last time out. Saliba demonstrated his world-class credentials with a Man of the Match display at Old Trafford, having already put in Man of the Match performances against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium and Liverpool at Anfield earlier this season.
Saliba has developed into one of the best centre-backs in world football under the guidance of Mikel Arteta. The £27 million that the North London club shelled out for his signature in the summer of 2019 must now be considered something of a bargain.
William Saliba more deserving of recognition this season than Virgil van Dijk
The 13-cap France international has earned plenty of plaudits for his performances this season. Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand described Saliba as “unreal.” It is therefore baffling that he was not nominated for the Player of the Season award, especially when van Dijk made the cut.
The Liverpool centre-back is undeniably a great player who has done remarkable things in his time at Anfield, but the Reds have been found wanting at the back all too often this season. The Dutchman himself was guilty of a major error when Arsenal beat Liverpool 3-1 earlier this season.
